Cluck Off! A Not-So-Scary DIY Scarecrow Near the Chicken Coop

Thank goodness for that donation box sitting in my garage, because when a fox started creeping near the chicken coop, I needed a quick fix.

That’s how this not-so-scary (and kind of cute) scarecrow came to life!

We’ve lost chickens to foxes in the past, and while I know nature takes its course, I still feel like it’s my job to do what I can to protect my flock.

So, this gal was built to stand guard and (hopefully) convince our early-morning visitor that someone’s already out in the field.

Made from Stuff We Already Had

This entire project came together using scrap wood, old clothes, and whatever else I could dig out of the garage.

The body is built from a fence post and a couple of wood furring strips, with the clothes stapled on for easy assembly.

Her head?

That’s a pair of old khaki shorts stapled into an oval shape, painted with craft paint, filled with twine and hay for puffiness.

She’s far from perfect, but she has pink cheeks, lips, and a touch of blue eyeshadow, and I have to say, she’s kind of adorable.

She’s Not Just for the Coop

Once our fox problem settles down, she’ll head to the garden to tell the rabbits to cluck off too, because those stinkers keep nibbling my plants.

This scarecrow isn’t fancy, and there’s no real “how-to” beyond using what you’ve got and making it your own.

Whether you’re trying to keep predators away or just want something fun in your garden, a DIY scarecrow is a quick, creative way to repurpose what’s lying around.
